Shafter Irrigation District Approves $9 Million Canal Plan
Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District directors cleared the way for a $9,000,000 Friant Kern Canal distribution system to effect irrigation for area lands. Shafter High School marked its 20th reunion of the first graduating class with alumni and guests attending a dinner. Seventy-nine seniors received diplomas at an outdoor ceremony before about 800 spectators.

Shafter to honor Brenda Bird at July 4 fireworks
Ten years ago this week Brenda Bird of Delano accepted an invitation from Shafter to be the honored guest at the city's thirteenth annual Free Fireworks on July 4. Charles Wesley Wikoff, son of Loyd C. Wikoff of Rt. 1 Shafter, was set to graduate from the local school.

Camp Fire Girls and Blue Birds Camp Out at Mannel Park
Six Camp Fire Girls units and one Blue Bird unit held an overnight campout at Mannel Park after school on Friday June 4. The event featured a film show from summer camps, a campfire and marshmallow roast, with each unit planning meals and cleanup and sleep arrangements. Leaders listed include Mrs Freeman Nixon and Mrs Joe Maniaci among others. Gerald Brown attended. The staff invited kindergarten through eighth grade children to join.

First Baptist Church Plans Vacation Bible School Parade
First Baptist Church of Shafter invites children to a five day Vacation Bible School themed Jesus Today's Answer. The program runs Tuesday June 15 through Saturday June 19 at 11 30 a m with Bible stories singing crafts. Former Shafter Resident Dies
Funeral services were held in Long Beach for Harry R. Thompson who died Friday June 4 in a Long Beach hospital after an extended illness. Thompson lived in Shafter for 25 years before moving to Long Beach three years ago and was active in community affairs. His widow worked as a secretary at Richland Primary School. Survivors include a son Bill of New York and a daughter Mary of Missouri.
