A. P. Ohanneson defeated S. P. Schultz by 231 to 130 to win the Richland elementary school board seat. County results show Harvey and West leading the Kern county union high school district board race, with Tomerlin and Gann far behind. Rio Bravo saw Earl Calder beat incumbent C A Merrill 36 to 35 for school trustee. Maple school re-elected A F Warten tin unopposed with 14 votes. Wasco high district members L F Barrows and A V Bennett re elected with 159 and 132 votes.

The stars and stripes used on Flag Day June 14 are all manufactured by the United States Army Quartermaster Corps in Philadelphia. Army posts receive hunting flags regimental colors and standards made there. Two seamstresses cut out the stars for official flags bound for Army posts.

Grievances Aired At City Council Meeting In Shafter
City council in adjourned session heard three grievances on Monday. Odor from the Walker street potato dehydrator was addressed by manager John Rust with sewage treatment steps. Grievance two covered gar bage pay and rates with Poznoff receiving a $10 monthly increase and a fair street cleaning rate set. Trees blocking sidewalks must be removed with replacements provided later by the forestry department.

Union Oil Company Spuds 8-34 Well in Shafter Field
Union Oil reports its 8-34 well reached a bottom depth of 11 460 feet in the Shafter field with the production zone open from 11 284 feet. Casing at 11 270 feet and 39.1 gravity oil observed. Equipment moving 1 320 feet west to the 10-34 location for a probable spud Monday.

Survey To Gauge Shafter Dial Phone Attitudes
Pacific Telephone and Telegraph agents will survey Shafter patrons to gauge support for a dial system and seek to include Lerdo and Rio Bravo in the local exchange. Approval from most subscribers and the state railroad commission is needed before installation, with costs rising 25 cents monthly and no charge to convert existing phones. Election contest ends for Shafter Public Utility District slate
In Bakersfield superior court Judge Warren Stockton overruled a demurrer and with a ballot recount, Oliver Sly and W. H. Hitchcock were declared the winners over Joseph Subbar and D. H. Potter in the May 2 election. Board members met May 8 to canvass the results.

Death of Elbert T Edwards Pastor in Shafter
The Reverend Elbert Thomas Edwards, 58, longtime pastor of the Pentecostal Gospel Mission in Shafter, died Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in Kern County after two years of poor health and diabetes mellitus. Funeral services were held at the Pentecostal Mission with Rev. H. B. Gilbert officiating. interment followed at Bakersfield Union Cemetery. A native of Dixon Tennessee born January 7, 1881, he had lived in Kern County for about 40 years and was a Taft oil boom pioneer and local real estate investor. He is survived by his wife Thelma J. Edwards, two daughters, and other family.

Spud Shipments Rise in Shafter District With Higher Prices
Spud shipments by rail from the Shafter district reached 908 cars this week, pushing the season total to 1 849 cars. Prices strengthened with U S No 1s at 80 cents and Bliss Triumphs at 1 35. Demand for Bliss Triumphs remains strong though acreage is limited. Rot hampers some fields. growers plan to roll tops and wait for rot to break down. Movement is picking up after a slow start but not as heavy as last year.
