Mr. Shafter’s Beloved Ben Grundy Dies After 65 Years of Service
George H. Grundy known as Mr. Shafter, 90, died at home on May 28 2002 after a lifetime of city service. A Shafter native since 1936 he logged 24 years on the city council including a Mayoral term. He helped found the Shafter Historical Society and led multiple civic projects and awards.

Kiwanis Honor Roll Honors Eighth Grade Scholars
Fifteen eighth grade students were honored at a Scholastic Achievement Banquet hosted by Kiwanis. Top honors went to Yurico Gutierrez with a 4.010 GPA and perfect attendance, named valedictorian and first in the science fair. Salutatorian Toreata Borsras Lad was recognized as Physical Education Student of the Year and mile and 3200 relay record holder. Shafter residents gathered at Shafter Memorial Park for Memorial Day ceremonies as Minter Air Field sent two World War I aircraft to perform a cemetery flyover.
