Judge blocks McColl waste to PWI site near Buttonwillow
A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ruled that waste from the McColl Superfund cleanup cannot be sent to the Petroleum Waste Incorporated facility near Buttonwillow until an environmental impact report is prepared. Judge Walter Croskey said the California Department of Health Services abused its discretion by proceeding without a full review, keeping a temporary injunction in place to halt over 200,000 tons of excavated waste from Fullerton to the Lakern Road site. The state plans have been appealed to the California Court of Appeals as health agencies weigh the future of the project and officials meet with Canonic Engineering to discuss next steps. The EIR is deemed necessary due to potential environmental impacts from cleanup, treatment, removal, transportation, and disposal.
