The annual graduation reception will be held in the High School patio immediately after the graduation ceremonies. Coffee and cookies will be served to graduates and their guests. Co chairmen include Mrs Scott McMichaels the new senior reception chairman for next year.
The Shafter Food Banks Inc marks eleven years in Shafter with a sale offering top prices in all food departments and a grand prize a 1959 Renault 4CV. Drawing for prizes is Sunday June 21. entry blanks are available at Food Banks stores with no purchase required.
Expansion of customer service announced by Anderson Motor Parts with the addition of outside parts salesman Ivan Bartel to cover the greater Shafter area. Bartel, 25, moved to Shafter in 1944 with his parents and is a 1951 Shafter High graduate. He previously worked four years at the local Safeway and earlier held a part time role at Hitchcock's Motor Parts from 1946 to 1951. He lives with his parents at 314 Marengo. Elmer and Dave Anderson, co owners, began business at their Dew Avenue location in September 1958.
The 1959 graduates confront a weak job market despite a strong economy. Many will compete with unemployed workers, with exceptions for those with exceptional talents or in specialized fields. The 29th annual Shafter High School commencement for 136 graduates is set for Thursday June 4 at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium. Speaker is Dr. Arnold E. Joyal president of Fresno College. Senior class president is William. music by the high school orchestra. Mr. T L Taber Jr deputy superintendent of Kern County High School District and district officials will attend.

The 3rd annual Potato Pick-Up raised between 600 and 800 dollars for the Exchange Club youth program. Club members donated time to collect and haul potatoes with Thompson Trucking Co providing the big truck and drivers. Ralph Baehr and Howard Shadwick donated additional trucks.
A special Shafter census led by Vernon L. Miller results in an unofficial population of 4 163 for the incorporated area. The count, taken May 25–31, could yield extra state tax revenue once certified by the Bureau of Census, with final figures pending for the next fiscal year.
