The Shafter Recreation Commission sponsors a Saturday tennis tournament at Shafter High School courts starting 9 o’clock. Open to students and adults, the event features singles doubles and mixed doubles for all skill levels. Contact Charles Easterbrook at the high school for details.
Shafter high school junior varsity swimmers led by Verna Peters place sixth at the all valley Exeter meet. Peters wins two events setting a valley record in the 50 yard free style with 31.9 seconds. Coach Foreman notes illnesses of key swimmers limited top placing.
Ida May Collett, Shafter High School English and drama teacher, reflects on her first year. Born in Burley Idaho and raised in Grandview, she edited school papers, studied at the University of Idaho, directed What a Life at Shafter, and plans a August marriage to Harlan Hill. She aims for a Master’s in Education and enjoyed teaching both English and drama, with greater satisfaction from drama classes.
