SHS introduces Manuel Garcia as Head Football Coach for the 2004-2005 season. The program is free for high school students with conditioning starting August 2 at 5:30 p.m. and free physicals August 5 at 5:15 p.m. in the ASB building. Garcia, a native Shafternite and former SHS athlete, emphasizes football traditions and team competitiveness.

Two Fatal Accidents Near Shafter Reported
The California Highway Patrol documented two crashes near Shafter last week. Fontana man Mario Antonio Castellanos, 68, died after a 1976 GMC Suburban tire blow out at 9:42 a.m. on July 25 on Highway 99 north of 7th Standard Road. he was not belted and died at Kern Medical Center. In the July 21 incident, Leonce Cruz, 22, of Bakersfield, driving a 1999 Pontiac south on Highway 99 near Lerdo Highway, lost control after a tractor trailer overtook him, overturned in the median, suffering major arm lacerations. he and all four passengers, who were belted, were taken to Kern Medical Center.

Chevron Robbed At Gunpoint By Two Suspects
The Chevron on East Lerdo Highway was robbed at 10 40 p m Tuesday July 20 by two Hispanic men 20 to 25 years old. One entered the store demanding money while the other acted as a lookout. Both fled west on foot after the theft. Police describe the inside man as 5 7 160 pounds shaved head white T shirt and light brown pants. The second suspect is 5 7 170 pounds also in a white T shirt. The Shafter Police Department is investigating.
