City Planning Commission Advances House Moving Ordinance
The Shafter Planning Commission approved moving a house ordinance and sent it to the city council after ten permit requests this year. A three member sub committee will review proposals to speed approvals, potentially cutting review to about two weeks. The panel also backed a Petrini Construction bus service for 24 apartment units on State and Walker Streets with a negative environmental impact finding. Public hearings were scheduled on Land Use Element changes Aug 3 and on Ernie Hofman tract maps at the next rogues meeting in August.

Attendance drops at Shafter junior rodeo amid injuries and sponsor reconsideration
Loyd Link of Kiwanis reports about 300 attendees Friday and a few more Saturday as a rain disrupted event at Rod Rodriguez Parkette. Sponsorship profits slumped with less than 300 expected after ticket splits and gate take. Injuries include a teen rider and an 18 month old baby as two bulls roamed the crowd. Kiwanis directors plan a Tuesday meeting to decide on future sponsorship. A soft drink stand run by the Shafter Chamber of Commerce cleared about 350, and a drawing yielded a $25 savings bond to David Thomas of Shafter and a beef basket to Rick Scott of Bakersfield.
