Gilbert Watson Social Security Manager in Bakersfield credits the 60th anniversary with highlighting a core public program that supports workers and families. He recalls the 1935 signing by President Roosevelt and notes current debates focus on preserving the program, not its existence.
A letter argues the City Council block on reform and warns of over a million dollars in potential lawsuits. The author advocates hiring Hal Onsum from within Shafter, criticizing outside candidates and urging spending on a local chief instead of a new city manager.
A Shafter resident, proud of 41 years in the city and four years on the parks board, defends City Manager Wade McKinney and Councilmember John Guinn against rumors. He highlights McKinney’s RTC era finances and Guinn’s cost saving sewer plant expansion in 1983, urging readers to attend City Council meetings to learn the full truth.
