Planes drop sterile pink bollworm moths over California cotton
A cooperative program in California's San Joaquin Valley uses sterilized pink bollworm moths released from airplanes to suppress native moth populations and protect cotton. The system tracks releases via a flight verification unit, with two aircraft covering Kern, Kings, Fresno, and Tulare counties. Since 1969 the program has grown to over 400 million moths released this year, aiming for at least 15 moths per acre per day.
