Varied Weather and School Curriculum Meet in Shafter

Shafter Council Approves Budget and City Plans
The Shafter city council approved a balanced $622 451 75 budget for 1970 71 with an 84 624 25 carryover from 1969 70 to cushion revenue gaps. The plan includes a 5 percent across the board cost of living increase and a 1.5 percent salary boost, raises money for retirement funding, and a 1.79 tax rate to remain unchanged for now. Capital outlays include city hall 1505 and police and public works expenditures while spending shows 92.61 percent of 1969 70 budget used and 28.59 percent of capital outlay. The vote followed street and recreation issues, with Nort Shafter Avenue improvement approved.

Ground-Breaking Planned For Shafter Starch Plant
Ground breaking for Western Polymer Corporation’s starch plant near Shafter is set for late fall at 30700 San Diego Street in Mexican Colony. Jim Gamlen says the plant will start within 120 days of groundbreaking, employ about 50 workers, process potatoes for starch and produce by products, with a future expansion to wastewater chemicals and related equipment.
