Shafter 4th of July event draws crowd and praise

Shafter residents enjoyed a free fireworks show on July 3 with a big turnout. Mayor Garry Nelson hosted the ceremony while Jill Wiebe led the pledge and Beverly Mitchell sang the anthem. Organizers, led by the Chamber of Commerce, raised 440 dollars with a 50/50 drawing won by Jilas Rodriguez, and a tri-tip barbecue fed attendees in the heat.

County redistricting meetings set across Kern County

Kern County residents in Wasco and Shafter urged to attend one of 12 public sessions with the Board of Supervisors about district boundaries. The Wasco gathering runs July 31 at 6 30 to 8 30 p m in the Wasco Veterans Hall. Officials seek ideas as census results show county population up 20 percent in 10 years and redistricting must rebalance districts under law.

Shafter pool reopens after maintenance work complete

Shafter Aquatic Center reopens Monday July 9 2001 after algae removal and extensive repairs. Phyllis Salazar chair of the Shafter Recreation and Parks Board says the pool looks like a brand new facility and will ease summer heat for local children. The baby pool reopened after an algae problem and the adult pool was drained and serviced, with more fixes planned as the board investigates maintenance lapses.

Shafter STAGE freshman summer study and work program

Ten new SHS freshmen join the federally funded Secondary Training and Growth Education program this summer. Mornings in class teach reading writing and math while afternoons find students doing part time jobs at the school and city sites.
