City sets year budget for capital projects and services

Sergeant Richardson graduates from Sherman Block Institute
Sergeant Greg Richardson of the Shafter Police Department completed the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute in San Diego on June 17, 2000. The eight month program covered crisis management death notifications officer misconduct and leadership. Graduates are expected to lead California law enforcement in the future and many hold top roles nationwide.

Shafterman hailed as hero by city
Ken Smith, a Shafter resident, helped chase a shoplifter after Stringham Drug Store owner Ted Wiedman pursued the thief. Mayor Garry Nelson and the City Council commended Smith on June 27 for heroism and going beyond duty. The incident began June 5 when a customer concealed cosmetics and fled. Wiedman chased, Smith intervened from his car and assisted, calling police.
