Patricia Byrd, a University of Sevies English graduate, and Donald St. Clair, a geography teacher from San Jacinto High School, join the staff. St. Clair will also coach B basketball and assist track. Elliott Rison’s resignation was accepted as he moves to William S. Hart High School in Newhall as manager.
The Shafter City Council trimmed the proposed 1962 63 operating budget from 285 706 to about 241 700 with further reductions to 83 500 projected for next year. Last year actual income reached 82 273 87 and sources include secured property taxes 55 000 business licenses 14 000 with reductions noted. Police salaries 53 020 fire 19 305 parks 98 00 lines of capital outlay include 22 000 street grader and 3 000 storm main work on South Shafter Avenue.
City seeks construction bidders for the proposed Department of Motor Vehicles building in Shafter. City Clerk William Johnston says bids should be submitted promptly to begin construction soon. Officials aim to move equipment in December to be ready for license plate renewals at the start of the new year.
