Shafter Chamber of Commerce members discussed potential filming locations as the Kern County trade group sent site descriptions to the chamber. Plans for a May Gay 90s weekend include a men’s barbecue, women’s contest, farm equipment shows, a cow pie contest with a $1,000 prize and a $4,000 fundraising goal, plus arts and crafts, petting zoo, a park event and a 10k run. Secretary Jean Johnson noted merchants could benefit from film crews, citing a florist example from another town. Zachary urged recruitment of more members to join the chamber activities.

MFAD board tables new vehicle and fax amid budget strain
Minter Field Airport District directors paused requests for a new vehicle and a fax machine as first half costs exceeded projections. Manager Kirk Nelson admitted budgeting flaws while expenditures rose from fires and leaks and farm lease losses. Directors pledged budget discipline with two quarters totaling 268000 spent 280000. New merchants joined the area, including a vacuum shop, copier and fax firm, and a Mexican restaurant on Central Avenue, with an old Mobil station slated for BP.

Shafter Chamber installs new officers and honors locals
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture held an awards dinner led by President Don Zachary who was sworn in for another term. Dan Tudor hosted with remarks by Dr. Harold Freedman and Father O Neill, while entertainment came from the Dixie Nut Cups. New board members Joe Kirk Russell Searcy Shirley Hays George Collins David Thomas Louise Jones Jay Atkinson Clay Appleton Jeannette Hemstedt were introduced. Christensen received a special chamber award as Frank Christensen battles medical delays awaiting a heart transplant at Stanford. Gary Wilson received the Agricultural award from Steve Furman, and Business Award went to a couple who started on a kitchen table and are expanding with a new building.
