Melt butter with sugar until blended then cool. Beat in egg and vanilla and whisk in flour with baking powder and salt. Stir in walnuts and bake in an 8x8 inch pan at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cut into bars while warm for chewy treats.
Franks simmered in boiling water five minutes then chilled and sliced. Arrange with drained beans onion and pickle in a salad bowl. Add lettuce and 1890 French Dressing, tossed lightly. Serves six. Mercury market noted in San Francisco and New York.
Magazine California's Country Carnival toured Mill Valley and Hemet drawing enthusiastic crowds to American Legion Halls. In Mill Valley Marguerite Fenner Pacific Gas and Electric cooked to Better Meals at Lower Cost while local appliance dealers showcased gadgets and prizes. In Hemet Elise Carter of Southern California Gas demonstrated gas cooking with more prizes. Local papers Mill Valley Record and Hemet News co sponsored and helped arrange prizes and entertainment. Outstanding products featured included C H dark brown sugar MCP pectin lemon juice Milani salad dressings and Skippy peanut butter with Alta coffee at Mill Valley and MJB coffee at Hemet.
