Plan to clean up former Brown and Bryant site in works
City plans public input on cleaning up chemicals at the former Brown and Bryant pesticide plant near Lerdo Highway and Central Valley Highway. The 1950 plant left 51 pollutants. 45,000 cubic feet of contaminated soil was removed in 1987 and the site was capped. The city monitors a nearby water well due to groundwater risk.

Shafter High teacher charged with meth manufacturing
Jeff Ryan Scheidemantel a 32 year old Shafter High chemistry teacher was charged by Kern County Superior Court with manufacturing a controlled substance and possession with intent to manufacture methamphetamine. Police found recipes firearms and precursor chemicals in his Bakersfield home and classroom during a search warrant. No court dates set.
