Shafter City Council approved reserve disbursements for capital projects including a 184,863 share for North of the River Sanitary District upgrades and a wastewater plant grit removal system. Community servant Tom Almberg dies at 67 in Shafter
Thomas Lee Almberg known as Tom, a former Richland School District Board member and Kern County activist, died January 18 after a long illness at age 67. A memorial service was held January 25 at Menno nite Brethren Church in Shafter with Rev. Mike Kotrola officiating and a reception at the Congregational Church. He lived in Shafter, served on the school board, helped found the Kern High School District Leadership Program, chaired Rotary scholarships, and led church missions for decades. He was born May 26, 1934 in Denver and grew up in Long Beach. He served in the U S Navy Reserve and worked in farming, real estate, and agriculture. He and Bernice Fairchild married in 1958 and had two children. He was active in the Boy Scouts and the Shafter Congregational Church for many years.
