Dr H B Cooper head of CPCSD research and cotton station honored as Citizen of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture installation dinner. Also recognized were Marvin Kirschenmann for Agricultural Person of the Year, Carl Moyer for Community Service, and Robert K Ogle for Business Person.
Congressman Bill Thomas of Bakersfield was guest speaker at Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture installation banquet. He addressed a 150 plus audience on changes in Congress, the 1980s as critical, and the need to limit government size and spending. He discussed agriculture, westward shift, and foreign policy views before a continuation on Page 3A.
A Sunday burglary arrest followed a high speed chase after a truck fled toward Lerdo Highway. James Thomas Rogers, 37, of Tulare Ave Shafter, held on burglary and possession of a billy club. Investigators pursued a second suspect as paint evidence linked the stolen refrigerator. Police cited barking dog complaints and noted two local arrestees serving time for related offenses.
The Delano College Center, an affiliate of Bakersfield College, offers about 30 spring courses in Shafter starting the week of January 28. Joaquin Patino is area coordinator and can register students in advance or at the first class. Courses run Monday through Thursday with various topics in office procedures composition child development food arts bilingual education real estate and psychology. Counseling and information are available at the Delano Center, 1942 Randolph Street, noon to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
Over 150 attended the Shafter Chamber of Commerce installation banquet held Saturday January 19 with Congressman Bill Thomas as guest speaker. Mary Siemens was installed as president for a second term and first to serve concurrent terms. Awards named H B Cooper Citizen of the Year Robert K Ogle Business Person Marvin Kirschen ann Agriculture Person and Moyer Community Service. Gloria Boggs and Ben Grundy were installed as officers. New directors include Don Zachary Sandy Wiedmann Rick Lawler Gloria Boggs Kerneth Anderson. Master of Ceremonies George Wise. Ralph Carpenter spoke for Kern County Board of Trade and thanked Shafter for attending the Outlook Conference.
