Richland schools show growth in API report

Richland School Board heard the API results at the January meeting. Redwood Elementary and Richland Junior High hit state growth targets while Golden Oak Elementary fell short but showed growth. Golden Oak tested 99 percent of students with a state target of 11. it achieved over half the target. Richland Junior High exceeded its target of 13 with a growth of 14, making it eligible for awards.

Parra outlines county budget cuts and shared sacrifice

Kern County Supervisor Pete Parra spoke at a breakfast to warn that state budget cuts could reach 3.4 billion, with 60 percent of county funds coming from Sacramento. He urged cooperation to minimize impact, noting a hiring freeze and essential services for the poor and trauma care, while Shafter officials said they planned to adapt and remain self sufficient amid reduced state funding.

The Shafter Seventh Day Adventist Youth Group hosts a yard and bake sale Sunday January 26 from 7 30 am to 4 pm at the Lerdo Highway and Poplar Clinics church. Kern County Health at 329 Central lists January clinics including a pregnancy screening by appointment January 27 9 11 am. Buddy Brown former U 2 and SR 71 pilot is guest speaker for an evening program. Kernville Whiskey Flat Days runs February 14 17 with rodeo parade fiddlers contest and more, free for most events. Shafter Chamber of Commerce ceremony February 27 at 6 pm honors local volunteers with USO 1940s nostalgia at the Veteran’s Hall.

Richland District Sets 2002 03 Goals For School Year

Richland District announced goals for the 2002 03 school year focused on raising academic performance, meeting API targets, accelerating literacy, continuing School Improvement Action Plans, and sharpening math and language arts instruction. It also outlines technology goals with staff development for ELD, safety initiatives with Shafter Police Department, and facility planning to finalize a fourth school site and select an architect.
