The Shafter Chamber of Commerce outlines five goals for 1947 announced by president Ernest Panero. The Press introduces Camp Fire News a new monthly feature on page 2 detailing local Camp Fire and Blue Bird activities and updates. The column will run once a month sharing news about the organization’s events and members.
The year 1946 was the busiest in Shafter Justice Court history per Justice E K Grant. Work volume rose about threefold from the prior year with filing fees $270. County fines $1,564, motor vehicle fines $4,767, and state fines $100. Total cases filed 702: 28 civil, 116 small claims, 174 misdemeanors, 384 motor vehicle.
An 18 year old, Victor L. Callis, died Sunday in a truck crash at Seven Standard and Popular Avenue when he failed to complete a turn. The accident happened about 4 PM. Parents are Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Callis of Delano. Funeral details and inquest time unavailable. Janzen ambulance responded immediately.
Mr and Mrs Henry Neufeld traveled to Los Angeles on a business trip starting Monday and returned home on Tuesday.
Mayor J. W. Frizzell announces March of Dimes fundraising momentum. A special Bank of America account channels contributions from organizations and schools. Cub Scouts go canvassing downtown. high and grade schools plan events. Funds support local polio relief, hospital care, equipment, and rehabilitation services.

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce unanimously approved by-law changes at Friday’s meeting. The reforms set membership minimum at ten dollars, created four member categories, revamped officer elections, filled vacancies by board appointment, and added the immediate past president as ex-officio director. The chamber switches from a fiscal to calendar year and adopts a new chamber seal.
Beth Dye Henley of Bakersfield will speak at the Wednesday Afternoon Club book section meeting on January 22 at 2 p m. The yearly theme chosen by Mrs Rolf Jacobsen is California History. Hostesses include Mesdames Joe Ohanneson Ike Peters J J Peters Walter Poznoff and Phil Ohanneson.
A single bale of cotton was burned in a Sunday morning fire at the Smith Garrison Gin near Five Corners with no other damage reported.
Richland School Varsity edged Shafter Hi s C by 13 to 12 as Paul Cato scored 5 field goals deciding the outcome. Vernon Edwards led Richland with 14 points while Ken Cooper added 7. Noon intramural play continues with 10 teams daily and officials from the Official Club enforcing rules.
A Southern Pacific passenger train called the Owl derailed near Lerdo a mile south of Cawelo after a split rail. The crash at 3 40 am on Friday left eight dead and many injured. Railroad workers and responders cleared debris while ambulance crews rushed passengers to Kern General Hospital.
Poster contest entries are due in Room 8, Kellyco Building, before the judge meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on Friday January 24. Posters will be displayed in downtown store windows until judging, then the winning posters will be shown. Competition among grade school students is described as keen, with many original posters received by Doctor Revell who heads the committee.
Albert Whitner was sentenced to 120 days in the Industrial Farm for drunkenness and disturbing the peace, per Justice of Peace E. K. Grant.
