Vernon Pierce named citizen of the year and other 1982 honors
Vernon Pierce chosen citizen of the year while Clyde Zachary earns Agri culture Person of the Year honors. An awards set recognizes community service with Ben Grundy Louise Jones Anderson Sandy Wiedmann Jerry Hawkins George Wise Betty Gloeckler and Rick Lawler as 1982 officers including President Rick Lawler and vice president Don Zachary. Outgoing President George Wise recalls 1981 accomplishments such as the Chamber float in several parades. Shafter marks its first Christmas parade in over 20 years and guest speakers resume at the monthly second C of C meeting amid ongoing Welcome sign efforts. Richland School District trustees approve a 29000 Metro Audio phone system to connect all district phones via the main switchboard. Superintendent Gary Smith says no extra staff needed to run the switchboard as seven‑year terms include options and stipends for district staff.
