Wasco leads the league with two wins last week and seeks its first league victory as it hosts Shafter in a bid to even a Wasco tournament Christmas week loss. Shafter fans plan to travel heavy while the Generals wary of Taft and Sanger results.
The Shafter area eyes growth from 16,000 to about 25,000 in five years as eastside development and Minter Field reactivation loom. A county jury suggests redistricting with Shafter Wasco and Buttonwillow in one district. The Shafter Chamber studies the redistricting, to be handed to supervisors.
Six members of the Shafter Experimental Station will submit technical papers January 26 and 27 at the 24th annual farm and home conference of the University of California at Davis. The participants are Harold Stanton, Larry Foy, John Stockton, John Turner, Marvin Hoover and Dr. Fred Endicott.
Rainfall for the period trails 1955 levels as experiments show 3.13 inches for the same span. January 16 recorded .1 inch of precipitation, marking a lighter day in the sequence.
Thirty Shafter Cub Scouts will sell Blue Crutch lapel pins to raise funds for the March of Dimes. Fred Hasty, campaign chairman, announced the event to run here Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of the Dimes drive conducted by the Shafter Kiwanis club. The drive includes distribution of collection cans to local businesses and outreach by mail, with a basketball event schedule in the afternoon at Richland featuring eighth graders against the junior high faculty and a benefit game at Shafter High School.
Rex Miller, a former diplomat and journalist, will speak at Shafter High Gym Monday at 8 00 p m on Are We Turning a Corner in the Mediterranean Miller, who has served in Ankara and lived in Ince Belgium Switzerland Turkey Iraq India and Australia, notes the world’s forces for good and recalls a Soviet frontier visit near Mount Ararat as part of his background.
Dr. Arnold E. Joyal president of Fresno State College will be the main speaker at the 1956 CC installation banquet. The event is set for February 8 at 7 p.m. in the Shafter High School cafeteria. Joyal, a former education professor, has led Fresno State for about eight years.
Richland school hosts a two day event uniting five Cub Scout packs for a training Pow Wow on March 3 and a Blue and Gold banquet on March 8 at the Richland cafeteria. Leaders, den mothers, and parents will attend workshops, displays, and program planning sessions in the primary school auditorium.
Charles J. Smith, 35, of Los Angeles, was fined 263 dollars by Judge E. K. Grant on a guilty plea to a drunk driving charge. He was arrested January 14 on Highway 99 by the highway patrol while his license was suspended, marking his third drunk driving conviction in five years.
Buttonwillow Elementary School now offers a general clothing class on Tuesday evenings. The Shafter High Adult Evening School announced the program and held its first regular meeting on Tuesday January 10. Mrs Helen Mattson will teach the class to help solve various sewing problems.
H W Pat Kelly state assemblyman joined Charles Tyner's sophomore English class at Shafter High School along with a doctor a minister a druggist teachers and students to discuss success. Speakers included Assemblyman K E Stringham Dr Freedman Reverend Waldo Wiebe student Joe Borjon and teachers Joe Galante Miss Shirley Moore Harlan Hill.
Principal Dr Grant W Jensen announced remodeling converting rooms 7 and 10 into a science laboratory for chemistry and physics. The project expands science space to meet enrollment growth, with work starting after school ends in June and completing over the summer. Special lab tables will be added for the enlarged area.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture asked Gov. Goodwin Knight to call a special legislature session to address water problems. The request, supported by a Bechtel study on the Feather River project, seeks a concurrent session with the 1956 budget session.
Strong possibility that golf would be played by the end of 1957 on the Northern County links. The county parks and recreation system voiced the plan today. Evans said the project is backed by local committees in Shafter Wasco and Delano who have raised nearly $5000 in goodwill money to show regional support.
Farmers in the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District area are urged to notify SWID officials if they plan to install new water lines or modify irrigation systems. Ted R. Thompson says reporting helps avoid conflicts with the Friant-Kern distribution lines and aids planning as bids for construction are expected soon by the Bureau of Reclamation.
The Department of Motor Vehicles announces a new examiner post at Shafter city hall every Tuesday from 8 30 a m to 4 30 p m beginning February 14. Examiner Jack Durel and his clerk move from Wasco to Shafter. Assemblyman H W Pat Kelly notes the change will reduce motorists travel for license renewals or new licenses and cut down prior negligence issues in the area. Registration plates may still be obtained in Bakersfield or Delano.
Richland area students started a county wide Junior Farmers program with leadership instruction offered by Don Edlinger from the county superintendent’s office. Edlinger had visited earlier to explain opportunities and met with upper grade students and Mr. Clay Hale to inaugurate the trial program this year.
At the mid year meeting the California cotton belt set planting seed at 119.00 per ton fuzzy basis for 1956. It marks the lowest priced quality seed, $13 per ton cheaper than last year, with John Turner of the Shafter Experimental Station leading a Q and A session with specialists and growers.
Jane Jones, 14, a Shafter High student, was injured Friday night when Arleigh Johnson lost control on Calloway Street and crashed into a parked UC owned car used by Marvin Hoover at the U S Cotton Station. She was taken to Kern General Hospital and later released. Damages were about 500 dollars.
