Shafter Prepares for Colours Festival And Arts Events
Shafter gears up for the Colours Festival of the Arts with a spaghetti dinner February 23 at the Veterans Hall from 4 to 7 pm and a 7 15 pm silent movie The Little General at the Congregational Church. The festival also features drama from Shafter High, a scarecrow decorating exhibit open for entries by February 22 with setup February 25 and display February 25 evening, and tickets and schedules on the City of Shafter website.

Health Corps speaker praises Shafter fitness programs
Colleen Luna of Health Corps told the Rotary Club that Shafter leads in school fitness with in place programs. Health Corps, co founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz and Lisa Oz, aims to curb childhood obesity by teaching teens nutrition fitness and mental strength through peer mentoring and community in school programs.

Officer involved shooting in Shafter on routine patrol
On January 16 2012 at about 0929 PM Shafter Police Officers Hayes and Marilao contacted two suspects at 265 E Euclid Ave Shafter. One suspect resisted fought and was shot by Officer Hayes. A handgun was recovered hidden on the victim who died at Kern Medical Center. The DA’s Office was notified and Hayes placed on leave. Media inquiries directed to Chief Richar ee.

Carjacker seized after Kern County chase
San Francisco man Luis Alberto Lua was arrested after a pursuit that began in Wasco and ended near Tulare. The suspect faced charges of carjacking evading arrest possession of a stolen vehicle and driving with a suspended license and was booked into Kern County Jail.

Three-car crash injures Wasco man and others
Guillermo Miranda, 58, of Wasco was badly hurt when his eastbound car collided with the Honda Civic and Accord after he tried to pass a slower vehicle in foggy conditions on Kansas Avenue. His passenger Angela Miranda, 53, was moderately injured. The Civic occupants Roman Martinez 49 Arnolfo Leon 31 and Maria Leon 31 of Delano were also injured. The Accord driver Martha Calderon 28 escaped with minor pain. The crash closed Kansas Avenue for 90 minutes. Alcohol was not suspected.

Generals open league play in SSL with wins and dominance
The Shafter Generals opened SSL play with a split boys and girls sweep. The girls overwhelmed McFarland 64 47 led by Britney Fowler 16 and Ramirez 15. The boys beat McFarland 62 41 behind a tight defense and Mason Gonzales 14. In league action, the girls defeated Arvin 56 42 and the boys topped Arvin 58 33 while showing speed and balance.
