Water storage rises in California reservoirs as drought eases
California water supplies have improved since mid December with gains in surface water storage and snowpack. Total storage in 143 major reservoirs reached 7.5 million acre feet on December 1 1977 about 39 percent of normal and rose to 9.5 million acre feet by January 1 1978 about 50 percent of normal. While storms since January 1 aided recovery ground water remains slower to rebound and will require several years of normal rainfall to restore aquifers depleted by drought two years of heavy pumping. Ground water typically accounts for about 40 percent of irrigation water in the state.
