Shafter Library Offers Tax Forms and Local Events

The Shafter branch library will provide Federal and State tax forms to the public. Kern County Economic Opportunity Corporation distributes free commodities Thursday Jan 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. at Shafter Veterans Hall. Shafter High School Majorettes host their first annual talent contest Saturday Jan 27 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, with entries due Jan 21. Proceeds benefit the band. Dinner for Shafter Chamber Installation and Awards

Citizens may purchase tickets for the 44th annual Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture Installation Dinner and Community Awards Ceremony at Shafter Veterans Hall on Saturday January 27. MC Danny Tudor will host. Green Hotel cooks provide the meal. Social hour 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dinner follows. Tickets $15. Call 746-2600 or 746-4068 for details.

Pool rebuild grant boosts Shafter recreation plans

Shafter Recreation and Parks District manager Lynda Leopold says the district will receive a $294,000 Roberts Zberg Harris Urban Open Space Grant to rebuild the pool behind Richland School. The grant covers $80,000 of the cost with the district needing $42,000 in local match. officials hope local businesses will contribute materials or in kind support. The pool, built years ago, has deteriorated with age and use.

Shafter Breaks Ground on 13 Million Return to Custody Center

Shafter joins Bakersfield and other Valley cities as CDC breaks ground on a $13 million Return to Custody RTC facility. Mayor Cathy Prout presides as the project launches, with 426 parole violators expected by early next year. The RTC aims to reduce prison costs, create about 60 local jobs, and generate $342,000 yearly in city revenue from an 8 percent state service fee.

Wasco Valley Rose Golf Course Groundbreaking

After a year of planning, construction began on the Wasco Valley Rose Golf Course with ground breaking attended by city officials developers architects engineers Wasco residents and Shafter officials. Officials touted the project as a regional asset and a first class affordable alternative to private clubs.

Interim water system for Cherokee Strip in Shafter

Shafter officials and Kern County Health Services warned residents not to panic as a $45,000 temporary water system began operations at Cherokee Strip. Two 5,000 gallon tanks, a booster pump, and aluminum piping receive water trucked from Shafter to supply the troubled area amid contamination readings of 0.1 to 0.4 micrograms of EDB and DBCP. Local residents questioned the expense, while Well No. 9 showed 0.4 to 0.1 micrograms.
