Kiwanis Club aids homeless mother in Bakersfield plan
Shafter Kiwanis presented a 1070 dollar check to Tonia Bishop, homeless after eviction, to cover first and last month rent on an apartment near San Joaquin College in Bakersfield. Amy McDaniel of the Cal-Nev-Ha 33 District Kids Foundation helped secure the grant. Bishop plans medical assisting studies and reunification with her children. A spring construction start for a youth center at East Buclid Ave is planned, with funding from Kern County Economic Opportunity and the City of Shafter, plus a California Youth Authority grant. The center will serve around 40 children and include a performing arts and youth activity space.
