Fire loss at Sportsman's Cafe-Lounge cut to about $48 000
Vernon Pierce of the Shafter Fire Department reports a final estimate near 48 000 after rechecking damage from an early moving fire that razed the cafe lounge. The preliminary 30 000 figures for building and contents were scaled down about 6 000 each. A coin changing machine valued at 1 000 was salvaged from the ruins. Continued on page 9.

Council bids delay department project by weeks
At Monday’s council meeting the department building issue dominated as two bids from December 22 ran about twice the estimates, blamed on sub contractors. Lawrence B. Plans Mapped for 1973 Start on Shafter Wasco Highway
State Highway 43 in Kern County between Riverside Street Shafter and Route 46 Wasco will become a four lane conventional highway with no access control. The project, following a safety hearing, will run along F Street Wasco to Kimber lina Road with 80 feet of right of way retained in the cities and an additional 28 to 40 feet outside.

Alley Pick-Up Schedule Announced for City
Shafter Public Works Director Lewis E. Carroll announced the annual alley pick-up plan. Crews will collect tree prunings and trash in the last two weeks of January with the east side starting Monday January 19 and the west side beginning Monday January 26. Residents should place debris in alleys before each week’s start.
