Kern High School District trustees study a possible bypass and bond election for April with an adjourned meeting planned Jan 18. Dr Eckhardt cites inflation growth and a need to restore cuts and reach state average funding while limiting any new levy.
Santa Barbara Savings and Loan opens its first mobile office in Shafter at 322 Central Ave next Friday at 10 a.m. The event marks a new savings concept to serve Kern County residents with full savings facilities while refreshments and a caricature giveaway accompany the ceremony. The Santa Barbara firm, headquartered in Santa Barbara with six offices, plans further mobile locations and potential acquisitions later in the year.
Dr Saad a leading starch chemist and vice president of Western Polymer Corporation will head a panel at the annual Shafter Chamber meeting to discuss the new starch plant. Paul Hobbs secretary treasurer and Briggeman will manage the Shafter plant with local foreman Clay Upperson also present.
Night temperatures in Shafter dropped below freezing for four consecutive nights from January 5 to 8 with a low of 24 degrees. Daytime highs reached 62 degrees on January 10 while soil temperatures ranged from 42 to 36 degrees. No rainfall occurred during the week at the U S Cotton Research Station in Shafter.
Vernon Witcher of 329 Walnut Street sustains serious injuries in a highway crash between Shafter and Wasco on Saturday. He is recovering at Physicians Hospital Bakersfield after surgery on a severe leg fracture and multiple other injuries. The driver of the other vehicle faces DUI charges and was taken to a Wasco hospital.
A smoker was blamed as Kern County firefighters respond to a blaze at 3:30 p.m. near Riverside and South Shafter Avenue. The 1965 vehicle owned by Willis Williamson of Shafter suffered about 400 dollars in damage, with its interior completely burned and the fire out of control upon arrival.
Free pickup of winter trash including branches and lawn debris in Shafter will occur over two weeks. Public Works Director Lewis E. Shen Carroll said east-side alley pickups start the week of Jan 18 and west-side pickups follow the week of Jan 25. Homeowners should place trash in accessible stacks for crews.
The Shafter city council discussed a revised holiday schedule effective immediately and a retirement program prepared with Bankers Life for city employees. A Police Department building is stalled by finances after a $130,000 bond was approved. The 40 year old water tower near Pacific Ave and Central Valley Highway will be demolished by April 1. Howard S. Dallimore of Kern County Employees Association attended and will join discussions on the retirement plan.
About 13 local officials from Kern Kings and Fresno counties are invited to the South San Joaquin League of California Cities meeting in Shafter. Memorial Hall hosts a social hour at 7 p.m. and a dinner at 8 with speaker Aarch, compend engineer, California department of public health, addressing landfill regulations. Attendance hinges on weather as committees prep for the quarterly gathering.
Evron Barber was seated as Richland Elementary School District superintendent as the board endorsed returning to Monday meetings. The district set 7:30 p.m. gatherings in term time and 8 p.m. during vacations starting January 8.
A Tuesday evening fire at 16673 Palm Avenue Shafter caused an estimated 3500 in damage. The blaze started when a motorcycle was fueled on a back porch of a wood frame residence owned by Voth Farms Inc and tenanted by Ken Wilson. Firefighters saved 500 of the structure and 450 of the contents. the motorcycle was destroyed.
