The new rule, effective Jan 1 2003, broadens helmet requirements to skateboarders and nonmotorized scooter riders under 18 in public spaces. Police chief says enforcement focuses on public places, while health officials cite safety benefits and provide helmet fit guidelines.
The California Highway Patrol plans to release a review of the September accident in the coming week. The investigation remains ongoing with officials stating findings will be made public shortly.
The event runs Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday 10 am to 4 pm with five dollar admission for ages over 12 and free for under two. Separately MAIT finished a Sept 29 2002 Shafter accident probe at Poso and Shafter Avenue where officer Ryan Hoyt responded. Village moms mother Maria Brito sues City of Shafter, the police and Hoyt for over 25000 dollars.
AROUND TOWN Grove says the project is "absolutely fantastic" for Shafter as Target seeks 500 full time positions with starting pay of 10.50 for ors and 8.90 per hour for Packers. Applicants must be high school graduates or equivalent and bring a work history. Grove notes a 20 minute orientation and future public access, while acknowledging unfinished interior space and inaccessible outside areas.
Henry Ratzlaff moved to Shafter in the 1930s and served as Kern Crest Manor administrator from 1969 to 1976. He and his wife joined Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church in 1988 and spent retirement as World Radio Missionary Fellowship visitors in Quito. He is survived by children Stanley Linda Christine Ruth and Joyce, plus three sisters. Funeral services were held December 30 at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church.
