City officials in Shafter publish an insert with maps and a questionnaire to guide the twenty year General Plan. August Caires urges residents to complete the prepaid survey, aiming for moderate to slow growth and preserving community character, amid expected population rise and a Frito Lay plant impact.
In 1984 a four part series promotes fitness with running. Pastor Roger Trautmann of Shafter, who ran the Fiesta Bowl Marathon in Scottsdale in 3 hours and 30 seconds, leads by example as he runs 3 to 5 miles daily. Teammate Mike McCoy finishes close behind. Trautmann plans to run for many years, sharing discipline and spiritual calm found through running.
A religious figure describes meditation prayer and discipline as essential. He trains for the 26.2 mile marathon by running 50 to 60 miles weekly in two sessions daily, aiming to stay lean and fit before the dusk. In Scottsdale he trains with Mike Ward, a 20 year old from Chapman.
The record notes Shafter’s brief early history as settlers arrived about 70 years ago, shaping the town with family life and a vision of a prosperous future. It recalls a landscape once dominated by cattle and sparse settlements.
Past Times Shafter traces the town's rise from a cattle loading point to a flourishing community. It highlights Hagan Tevis and the Kern County Land Company, water from the Kern River, settlers like Fredrick Mannel, Charlie Shomate, and the Stones, and Shafter's emergence as a frontier hub with farms, schools, and early industry.
