Shafter Opens New Return to Custody Center Facility
Friday marked the grand opening of Shafter’s 16 million Return to Custody Center on East Ash Avenue. Mayor Cathy Prout led the ceremony with 200 attendees, noting the project’s role in local economic development. The five acre site, built by Gardemeyer Development and leased to the city, will house parole violators and create about 60 jobs, with annual city revenue around 400 thousand dollars. The center, housing up to 426 inmates, aims to reduce mainline prison caseloads and includes education and support facilities for inmates.
