Four MFAD board seats open in November election
MFAD is holding a general election for four of five seats on the Minter Field Airport District board. Kirk Nelson says the November vote is important for the district and cheaper due to reduced printing costs. Rex Tudor seeks reelection to the seat he was appointed after Robert Diltz's death. Jack Thompson, first elected in 1989, is not up for re election. Current directors are John Putman, Dana Mulder, Jim Albright, and Thompson. The board governs the 1235 acre district.

Jennifer Groves Weishaar, a 24 year old Shafter High School graduate, joined Bon Jean Foods Catering on February 1 1996 with partner Jack Zimmerman. They cater at The Petroleum Club offering lunches for members and private parties while expanding Friday night dinners. The venture follows her journalism studies at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and family encouragement.

A Friday benefit at Shafter Veterans Hall drew 200 to 250 people to support 11 year old Christine Johnson facing Mono Epstion Bar Virus and Somatiform Pain Disorder. Nearly $18,000 was raised to cover medical expenses with remaining funds to form a Community Chest for future needs. Christine’s family described improvements and potential return home as March 4 nears as residents volunteer aid mounts.
