Kern County Union High School and Junior College district votes to place a 9 million dollar bond issue on May 6 for new high schools and campus additions to handle rising enrollments. Board resolution at a semi monthly meeting sets legal steps for the election. District officials anticipate opening a new high school in the Bakersfield area in fall 1961 and purchasing a site this year.
Shafter City Council approved hiring a traffic officer to issue overtime parking tickets in the downtown area and patrol Shafter High School during lunch. The move follows a Chamber of Commerce request for stricter enforcement of one hour parking during business hours to free space for shoppers.
Forty two merchants in Shafter invite Northern Kern shoppers to Dollar Days event for Friday and Saturday. Merchants Division of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce organized the sale with a wide range of retailers including department stores hardware florists auto supply and beauty parlors. A. J. Hemingson leads the committee with directors Earl Johnson Al Finkbeiner Boots Perry and James Tucker planning the next event.
Police Chief John Reily said overtime restrictions will start as soon as a new officer is hired, likely by March 15. He has city council authorization and aims to mark tire positions with chalk and patrol hourly to issue citations. Night and holiday parking will not be restricted.
Two adult education classes are underway at Shafter High School with enrollments still being accepted. The third session on Wednesday February 25 features a Men's Physical Education class led by Marlin Olsen from 7 to 9 p.m. A sewing class by Mary Lou Jones meets Monday evenings 7 to 10 in the homemaking wing, covering beginner to advanced sewing techniques.
Seniors at Shafter High School explored job prospects and business opportunities during Senior Career Day. An 8:45 a.m. assembly featured Wendall Kinney of KGEE Bakersfield with the talk Now What Do I Do? The program included small group discussions and afternoon field trips to Kern County Telephone Company and other local employers.
Harris says the city street department will install concrete gutters along Central Avenue from Central Valley Highway to Five Points at an estimated $4500. Last year James Street was blacktopped from Lerdo to Shafter Highway for $2500. In two weeks 1800 feet of six inch water line will be installed in the Weinberger tract with further water lines and sewers planned for Woodland Tract.
Les Neufeld of Newport Beach presented a motion picture and narrative program on skin diving at the Shafter Rotary club gathering Tuesday noon. He described his Gulf of California diving experiences while Mert Wiedmann served as program chairman.
Ivan E. Hein of 211 Kernstreet, a welder, sustained second degree burns Tuesday morning while welding at Adams Hardfacing Co. Fire Engineer Wimpy Bender said a torch flashback caused the burns and no equipment was damaged. He received treatment from a local physician.
Shafter angler Harvey Gaede who last year caught a six pound trout on Crowley Lake is pictured on the front panel of the 1958 Crowley Lake folder mailed to thousands of fishermen. The lid shows Gaede with his catch and the new fishing season opens March 17.
Shafter reports 1.25 inches of rain this week lifting the season total to 6.56 inches, the highest in six years. A February record 2.80 inches was reached, with February last year at 0.68 inch and a week recording around 0.9 inches. The figures come from the Shafter Experiment Station observations.
Kern County supervisors appointed Lewis J. Woodard as interim judge of the Shafter Judicial District to fill the unexpired term ending in June. Noble Blake Witcher withdrew his appointment bid citing medical reasons and plans to run in the June primaries. Woodard, born in Charlotte Michigan and resident of Shafter since 1950, is a former auto dealer and active in local youth work.
Shafters officials search for a second dogcatcher on a part time basis after Dale Proctor’s resignation. Two applicants are under consideration as the council favors a semi retired man earning 100 dollars a month.
Bert Bates, ex advertising manager of the Shafter Press and six year director of publicity for Kern County Fair, is named permanent secretary-manager of the fair under the 15th District Agricultural Association. Albert S. Goode said Bates was unanimously chosen and the 1958 program should succeed under his direction. Bates has broad journalism and publicity background including owning the Rosenburg Oregon News Review, sporting cartooning in Portland papers, producing western films, and serving with Stars and Stripes during World War I on five fronts.
The Shafter Generals host the Coalinga Horned Toads on Friday to cap the South Sequoia League title. Shafter seeks a first league crown after a 46 to 52 overtime upset loss to Garces Ram last week, the second straight OT defeat.
Curran of Bakersfield named campaign chairman for Knowland in Kern County as California counties organize their own Knowland for Governor committees. Vince Rojas of Garces led scoring with 22 points and Jim Nixon of Shafter added 16 as Nixon grabbed 17 rebounds in Shafter High action.
Robert Goodin of Kern County Housing Authority announced the plan to sell Kern Homes east of Shafter was dropped after the Kern County Board of Supervisors could not guarantee continued sewer and water services from Minter Field. Bids on the 85 unit development will be returned unopened.
