Shafter's volunteer firemen voted to accept a blanket policy costing 200 dollars annually, covering 2000 dollars death benefit, 2000 for total disability, 1000 for loss of a limb, and hospital costs up to 25 dollars weekly for ten weeks. Initial 50 dollars paid. remaining 20 dollar installments due over eight months.
The Richland grammar school lightweight basketball team lost 24 to 22 at Wasco. Ed Gaede led Richland with 14 points, Munroe Stevens added 8. Starting lineup: Joe Rodriguez, Ed Gaede, Munroe Stevens, Murray Evans, Merle Annis. Bench: Clarence Kattenhorn, W. R. Cloud, Jubilee Barton, Harold Schnaidt, Ray Sallee.
County Assessor Tom F. Burke met with assessors from the San Joaquin valley and coast in Fresno to seek uniform values for farm produce dried fruits livestock and vines for the 1937 38 assessment period.
Citizens of Shafter and the surrounding district pooled funds to aid flood victims in the Mississippi and Ohio valleys, totaling 852 dollars and 87 cents. The list of donors includes numerous individuals, stores, churches, and organizations contributing varied amounts.
Shafter High School held a Wednesday afternoon assembly inducting spring semester student body officers. Janzen remains president with Jack White as vice president Rosie Unruh as secretary treasurer Willie Steele social chair Ruth Kirschenmann girls athletic manager Don Kliewer boys athletic manager. The band played March of the Guards and Atlantic Coast.
A. W. Eckmann president of Kern County Y M C A named the council committeemen for the coming year. The selections were made at a Bakersfield meeting Monday night after three new directors were elected February 2 and Eckmann's re election as president. Shafner roster includes J. W. Unruh athletics and E. P. Janes boys club.
Bakersfield high school junior college band staged a Friday night concert for 300 music lovers in Shafter featuring a comic piece titled In a Bird Store. Harold Burt introduced the piece with a concise synopsis as soloists Albin Actis Irvin Olsen Glenn Siemon and James McCullough received praise for standout performances. Proceeds fund music awards and band uniforms.
Kern County Chamber of Commerce directors and committeemen will meet Tuesday March 2 at 6 pm a dinner at El Tejon hotel Bakersfield. Reports on wild flowers and ration status to be presented. Albert Irwin is spending a few days in Los Angeles on a combined business and pleasure trip exploring meetings and local sights. He plans to visit partners and enjoy the city culture during his stay.
Bill Blizard 47 popular Sill ranch employee died in Bakersfield Monday from pneumonia. Services set for tomorrow at 2 PM at Janzen Funeral Home with Rev. E T Edwards officiating. Interment Shafter Cemetery. Survived by wife Minnie four children Billy Phyllis Donna and Doris three brothers Frank John James and sister Mrs Gerald Duncan. Frank and the sister to attend.
Petitions calling on the county supervisors to call an election for the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation district will be circulated starting Saturday. A Wasco meeting will select circulators, with another Shafter gathering planned, aiming to secure 500 signatures.
Kern County Water Commission secretary Roland Curran spoke at Legion hall during the Exchange club noon meeting. He outlined benefits expected from the Central Valleys Water Project and the steps needed to complete the program, noting the talk was postponed due to prior club business.
A fire on a refrigerator car on a siding south of the section house caused slight damage Sunday morning. Only floor and wall sections near one end were harmed. Firemen answered at 8 30. A transient is suspected to be the accidental starter. Firemen's fund gained fifty cents from the incident. Two quarters were found in discarded trousers near the scene.
Victor Carpenter a 42 year old pedestrian from Shafter suffered a compound fracture of the arm after being struck by a motorist while walking beside a road near town. He was transported to Kern General Hospital for treatment.
The Congregational church in Shafter announces its first annual dinner meeting on Thursday March 4 at the Wednesday Afternoon clubhouse. Rev Dr Frank Linder of Oakland to speak on This Country of Ours Will It Survive Gloriously or Fail Tragically with Rev Anthony Donat introducing. Music includes Wasco high school glee club and a piano solo by Alfred Smith. Tickets from Shafter Mercantile and the Warehouse of Shafter Drug.
Workers survey 1936 crop acreages in Kerr county as part of the 1937 agricultural conservation program. Information from growers remains confidential on worksheets to map acreage and guide program aims. Meetings will explain aims, form new committees, and outline payments for reducing soil depleting crops and planting soil conserving crops, including five cents per pound for cotton.
Jack Singer, principal of Maple Grammar School and president of the Kern County Elementary School Principals Association, presided at the fourth annual public relations banquet at the El Tejon in Bakersfield. He welcomed 300 guests and presented the evening speaker Dr. Everett Dean Martin on A Social Philosophy for Modern Education.
Fire units responded to a Sunday night car blaze two blocks south of the tracks on Lerilo road. Bill Galkin's roadster was damaged but quickly extinguished by Galkin throwing dirt on the flames.
At 6 30 a m on Lerdo road east of Jamies street a car carrying F M Hamilton 38 his wife Verna and Spray Havens collided with a tractor left by Warkentine who had been forced to stop for gas. Hamilton suffered a fractured rib and lacerations Verna a fractured elbow and hand injuries Havens head lacerations. An ambulance conveyed them to Kern General hospital in Bakersfield.
The Richland gram mar school girls volleyball team played their best game yet with refined teamwork. Players listed include captain Eleanor Fox and teammates Dorthy Mayer Luella Johnson Edna Wyckoff Aileen Glenn Esther Becker Lois Hamilton Reda Hill Maggie Spitzer Laura Koop Louise Livers Leonora Wittenberg Wilma Jean Henderson Vera Klassen Susie Mendren Minnie Koop Lia Vada Womack. Coaches are Mrs Engle and Miss Dedrick.
Delta Nickel, four months old, died in an intersection crash on February 13. Funeral rites were led by Rev. C. C. VanGorham at Shafter Cemetery. S. W. Jansen sang with organ accompaniment by Mrs. Sam Janzen. The baby's mother, severely injured in the crash, attended the service.
Four members of Shafter Troop 41 work through tests toward second class scout rank. Key requirements include first aid cooking tracking thrift compass study knife and ax use and six other tests. The four nearing the goal are Louis Wade Leland Bell Merle Annis and Eldon Myrick.
Nine Girl Scouts will receive their tender foot pins next Tuesday night March 2 at 8:00 o'clock in the American Legion hall.
