Beet Fertilizer Trial Near Lerdo On Shafter Farms

Beets planted on 240 acre Lerdo district land by Shafter Farms owners Phil Channeson and Jim Camp, with M A Lindsay farm advisor, near completion. A two acre plot tests 1000 and 500 pounds of ammonium sulfate to measure yield effects, following last year’s finding of faster early growth and 5 to 6 ton per acre gains. Despite good past results, fertilizer not applied to the main field due to good soil conditions from prior potato crops. future fertilization depends on plant need. Recent rains created a crust delaying shoots and some replanting may be needed.
