Residents may sign up for a tear gas defense class set for Thursday February 12 at 7 p m in Shafter City Council Chambers. The course costs 30 and includes a tear gas permit certificate and container. Norvan Powers of the International Association of Security Professionals teaches. The Whisky Flat Days festival features the annual Invitational Art Show in Kernville. It runs from Friday February 13 to Sunday 15 weather permitting, with outdoor displays at Palo Ranches Motel near the west river bridge in Whiskey Flat.

Rosalee Drive permits boosted January construction to 2061000, while a quake shook Shafter in 1971 and council faced business license scrutiny. Fourteen people who served as Buttonwillow mayor were honored in a 20th anniversary Chamber event. Five years ago in February 1976 Loyd Link reentered a City Council race as drought rains ended briefly.
