Funding for Bakersfield College track resurfacing

The Kern Community College District receives 72 777 from the Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce to cover half of the cost for resurfacing the Bakersfield College Memorial Stadium track. Ralph Zellers presented the check to the KCCD board of trustees. The district will use existing funds for upkeep and future budgets to cover the rest, with a Tartan track expected to yield savings after five years. Dr Edward Simonsen noted concerns about the Governor's budget. The next KCCD board meeting is at Porterville College February 18 at 4 p.m., and the 1971 72 academic year calendar was adopted with September 7 opening and June 9 closing.

Public Works Director Lewis said the plantings could be completed in three months, with early-spring project scheduling. The effort has gained popularity nationwide, though trees’ slow growth means results won’t be immediate. The Improvement Council praises the project and the administration’s backing for 1971.
