Four Hurt as Auto Is Struck by Train at Shafter Crossing
Four members of the Stringman family were injured slighty when their car was hit by a freight train at the Shafter avenue crossing of the Santa Fe tracks. Mrs Stringman suffered a deep scalp laceration while Mr Stringman and two children had cuts and bruises. The driver did not see the train approaching as the car neared crossing.

Bids Called for New Richland School Building Project
The Richland elementary district board calls for bids to construct a one story frame and stucco classroom addition at Richland grammar school on Lerdo road near Poplar avenue. Bids open March 4 at 8 p.m. The project expands a district already funded by a 1937 50 000 bond approved 136 to 2. Architect Ernest J. Kump Jr designed the structure for primary grades with secondary classes in existing buildings. A $51,000 damage suit against Kern County was settled for $5,200 to be shared by Gustave Weyand Julia Weyand and A J Zimmerman of Shafter. The compromise came from the insurer citing jury uncertainty, not dissatisfaction with county defense. The case involved a fatal October 2 1936 automobile accident near a Calloway canal bridge on Seventh Standard road.
