Shafter Builds Big Year Despite Federal Restraints
Shafter posted a $324,850 total in building permits for 1946 with $234,500 for residential and $90,350 for commercial activity. Early-year permits reached $168,200 before federal limits slowed activity to $8,650 in May and June. December alone added $36,700 plus various electrical and plumbing permits. Inspector E. K. Grant noted 1,050 inspections during the year, suggesting a possible postwar building boom if restrictions ease.
