The Shafter Press Wasco Tribune office closes early on December 31 at noon and will be closed for New Year Holiday on January 1 2010. The deadline remains Monday January 4 at 10 a.m. for news items due Friday at 5 p.m. The Shafter Recreation and Parks District is accepting 2010 Youth Basketball registrations for ages three and a half to eighth grade with a December 18 deadline. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Minter Field Air Museum Seeks Volunteers for Plane Restoration
Minter Field Air Museum invites volunteers to assist in restoring airplanes and researching WWI WWII and U S military history. Visitors are welcome Saturdays 10 to 2, and a weekly youth program for Kinder through eighth grade meets Wednesdays 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at First Southern Baptist Church, 250 Kern Street, Shafter.

Bank robbery suspect held on multiple charges in Shafter
The Shafter arrest follows bank robberies at Bank of America on December 17 and West America Bank on December 21. Gary Arthur Sanders was located December 23 and is in Kern County jail for unrelated charges with pre-trial set for December 29. Investigators credit multiple agencies and media tips for leads.

Fatal crash on I 5 near Lerdo Highway
California Highway Patrol reports a fatal crash on Interstate 5 near Lerdo Highway at about 3 35 a m. A 50 year old male driver traveling southbound at 65 70 mph overcorrected and crossed into the other lanes causing his 2008 Dodge to roll multiple times and strike the center divider. The roof caved in and the driver died. Two passengers Jose Ruiz and Elisio Gomez, both from South Gate California, sustained minor injuries and were taken to Kern Medical Center for treatment.

Sequoia students donate blankets and scarves to Bakersfield homeless center
