A large crowd attended the Shafter Police Department auction featuring office equipment, typewriters, adding machines, sound gear, car stereos, tools, bicycles, and more. Sgt Gary Knox and Community Service Officer Al assisted as items were sold from modest bids to up to 500 dollars, with motorized vehicles carrying minimums. many items were unclaimed or outdated city property.

Marshall Bassett son of Freida Bassett, a Bakersfield native raised in Shafter, will join the Air Force January 6 1988. A 1986 Shafter High School graduate, he served as FFA vice president in 1985 and as sentinel in 1986. He plans basic training at Lackland and to become an air traffic controller after general agriculture studies at Kings River Community College. His 20th birthday and Christmas were celebrated together with family and friends in Shafter.
