Planners Urge Lerdo Work and Road Repairs

The city planning commission called for steps to improve Lerdo water supply and repair Lerdo Road both west and east. They re elected H W Pat Kelly as president for the year. Meetings set for the third Wednesday each month with top priorities on Lord Road between Shafter and Highway 99 and later on the route to Belridge.

Speeding Crackdown on Highway 99 Nets 998 Citations

Justice of the Peace E K Grant notes 998 speeding citations issued by the California Highway Patrol along a nine mile stretch in Shafter during Christmas weekend. About $2000 collected in penalties, and top speed recorded at 95 miles per hour, a record for a holiday period.

Lining Project Nears End on Friant Kern Canal

Lining work on the 160 mile Friant Kern Canal from Millerton Lake to the Kern River near Bakersfield is in its final five miles with completion targeted by February 1. Superintendent Jim Bett reports lining has reached Snow Road five miles from the end, while final service could come only a few months after.

Shafter Council Accepts St. Therese Church Annexation

The Shafter City Council approved an ordinance to annex St. Therese Church property located on Lerdo Road into the city limits. The action expands municipal boundaries and includes the church parcel within city jurisdiction.

City crews may get insurance

Twenty two city employees were authorized this week to study a group insurance plan with half the cost to be borne by the council. Two Bakersfield insurance men, tar Bender and Ferneley Roberts appeared before the council to seek permission to talk to the employees about group insurance.

Disaster Corps Ready for Service in Shafter

Commander John Reily announced the disaster corps network is fully set up in Shafter awaiting integration with the state system. Leaders named, auxiliary police expanding, observation post planned at William Lachenmaier ranch with telephone facilities, and a long list of key and deputy personnel appointed to organize American Red Cross and public works, health, and transportation duties.

City Approves Shafter Avenue Road Repair Plan

City council approves widening and repair of Shafter avenue between Five Points and Stone street. City Engineer John Reaves to seek gasoline tax funds to cover about 10 650 dollars, with county work on adjacent blocks to keep uniform. Project expected to start within two months pending state approval. sidewalks curbs and gutters to be placed first.

Fire department resuscitation efforts fail for visiting Oklahoma woman

Mrs. Bell Church, 73, of Oklahoma, visiting daughter in Shafter, died of a heart condition at 2 23 p m after county and city rescue crews attempted resuscitation at the South Shafter Labor Camp. Her body was taken to Flickinger Janzen Funeral Parlor. Rescuers included Paul Roblger and L F Cornelius from county and Vernon Pierce and Albert Finkbeiner from city.
