C of C Holds Last Meeting Of Year
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce held its final 1949 meeting Friday at Vets Memorial Hall. No meetings until after the new year. The group discussed wider use of mail delivery and urged firms to use free Carter deliver ice within city limits. A bid to improve post office service and a letter to Congressman Werdel were noted. A brochure committee and plans for a Central Valley Highway meeting in January were also discussed.

TB X-Ray Drive In Shafter Dims New Cases
One hundred thirty four chest X-rays were taken in Shafter by the Kern County Tuberculosis and Health Association Mobile Unit last Saturday. It was the eleventh survey in the area since January 1, 1947, totaling 4609 X-rays with nine new cases detected, six this year. A renewed campaign with anti TB education, X-ray outreach, and personal contact will be launched in spring.

Warn Merchants To Be On Look Out For Burglar
Chief Riley of the Shafter Police warns local merchants to be vigilant for a light skinned negro of medium height who has staged two burglaries in Shafter. He says the suspect has entered two business offices posing to use a phone or similar excuse and rifled cash drawers when entrusted staff were not watching.

Funeral services for Shirley Ann McClure
Shirley Ann McClure aged 1 year, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert B McClure, will be buried at Shafter Cemetery after funeral services at First Baptist Church on Friday December 23 1949 at 2 PM with Rev E B Andrews presiding. Shafter Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Lee's Drive In Burglarized at Tulare Avenue Site
Sometime between two and six last Thursday morning Lee's Drive In at 224 Tulare Avenue was burglarized. About $115 in small bills was stolen from the cash register after entry was gained by manipulating a side window. The burglars left by the front door, with police noting no burglary evident until the cash drawer was checked.

Mrs. D. M. Herman of Wasco, a pioneer founder and mother of Basil W. Herman, died of a heart attack this past week. Born April 21, 1873 in Barrow-in-Furness England, she settled in Wasco in 1907. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Payne & Sons of Bakersfield handled arrangements.

FD Action Saves Baby in Kern County
Shafter Fire Department responded to a call for Brinda Gale Steelman two weeks old. A resuscitator treated the infant for fifteen minutes before transport to Kern County General Hospital. Assistants were T. L. Kinkaid Rem Bristow and P. V. McClure. The baby remains in good condition and improving.

Glenn O Nay of Shafter High School received praise from Forrest Bassford of the Western Livestock Journal for the school entries at the Great Western Livestock Show. Community Chest Drive Opens in Shafter to Raise 5200

Three Petty Crimes Reported by Shafter Police
The Shafter Police Department reported three petty crimes last week. Johnnie Padgett, 21, of Shafter, was arrested on the 17th on a bench warrant for default of payment and sentenced to 90 days in county jail with no chance of suspension. Owen Patrick Conway, 41, of Shafter, also arrested on the 17th for default of payment, had his sentence suspended and must report weekly to court. Carl Harp Jr, 25, of Salinas, brought to Shafter after finishing a sentence to answer for passing bad checks, received a 30 day sentence and must report to court regularly.
