North Kern runner Matthew Velasquez heads to National Junior Olympics
Matthew Velasquez, an undefeated 1998 CCAL cross country standout from North Kern, qualified for the National Junior Olympics in Lisle Illinois after winning the 4000 meter association race in Visalia on November 14 and placing fifth in Region 14 in Fresno November 22. The event gathers 3500 youth runners ages 8 to 18 from 15 regions across the nation with finals near Chicago on December 12. Velasquez has raced with Shafter Striders since 1992 and is coached by Danny Cruz, Rick Gonzales, Brian Rye, Robert Waters, and Terry Lewis at North Kern Christian School in Wasco.
