Dr. Ohlsson offers holiday reflections amid tragedy and economic worry as the first Skeptical Seventies season begins. Readers hear of tight Yule tide credit, hopes for jovial times, and a note on neighborly cheer as Christmas Eve music keeps blocks awake.
Kern High School District trustees decide to hold a tax override election with the county-wide trustees election on April 20. Superintendent Eckhardt warns the district has operated at maximum legal tax rate for six years amid 6 percent inflation and 2 percent student growth, risking nearly 100 teachers.
At the November 23 city council meeting Mayor Hildébrand said progress toward a city employee retirement program is near. Bankers Life was chosen to frame the plan and George Jones named agent of record after a field of applicants. Councilman Moyer noted Bankers Life advancing a program for early completion.
Shafter High School president Todd Kodet departs San Francisco for South Africa to join his American Field Service family for Christmas. He will attend the wedding of Olga Carinus to Marthinus Victor near Cape Town and finish the trip after summer earnings.
The council agreed to keep the current health and medical insurance setup until next policy expiration in September to allow study of alternatives. A second reading approved extending the curfew to 10 p.m. A discussion on raising the speed limit to 35 mph and radar traffic control costs was authorized, with reports due.
Dr. Harold Freedman and Dr. Ryland M. Jacobus will depart Shafter in January for two years of study and teaching at the University of California Davis. Dr. Kodet will continue practice in Shafter, moving to a new suite in the local medical building. The remaining two doctors, Dr. O G Ohlsson and Dr. V F Gontero, will stay. Dr. Freedman, after 24 years in Shafter, will study physical medicine and rehabilitation at UCD and plans to return to Kern County for rehabilitation work in Bakersfield. He will keep an office in Shafter and has deep ties to the community and Shafter High School health program.
Shafter residents are reminded of a holiday yard and home decorating contest sponsored by the Community Improvement Council of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce. Wayne Wood announces two categories religious and contemporary with plaques for winners. Residents can call Wood's Shoe Store or The Shafter Press to ensure entry and the judging will occur citywide with winners chosen on December 20.
The week in Shafter showed a seasonal pattern with highs near 72 degrees and lows around 28 to 31 degrees. Soil temperatures ranged from 51 down to 44 degrees as daily readings from the U S Cotton Research Station in Shafter are reported.
The Shafter City Council approved a revised curfew extending hours to 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for residents under 18. The ordinance also assigns parental responsibility and sets penalties for violators. The change aligns Shafter with Kern County norms and follows a high school petition.
Mert Wiedmann is nominated for president of the Shafter Rotary Club with Elio Cordoni as secretary for a second term Irvin Nickel as treasurer and Bill Siemens and Bud Herrington as directors The officers will be elected next month to take office in July 1971.
