The Ward Charcoal Ovens in Ward State Historical Park near Ely Nevada feature six beehive kilns built in 1876 from native rock to fuel the Martin White smelter about three miles away. Each kiln stands thirty feet high and stores about thirty five cords of wood. After the smelter closed in the 1880s the ovens served as stables for sheep and cattle and once as a bridal suite for a Nevada gambler and his wife.
