Half of Ranchers C C workers idle amid contract stalemate
More than half the Ranchers Cotton Oil plant staff remain out of work after layoffs on October 7 and a stalled union contract. Local 78 leader Flay Deaton says talks have halted since October 17 with no new meetings scheduled. The cooperative reports some contract proposals settled, but 22 of 44, while 15 union proposals remain with no movement. Plant fires, seed intake continuation, and market pressures from palm and soy oils frame the crisis. The privately held Ranchers Cotton Oil, a grower cooperative, ranked among California’s top 100 private firms with $130 million gross in 1984.
