Richland District Trustees Hold December Organizational Meeting
The Richland School District Board held its organizational meeting on Monday December 7 swearing in new members Marylee King and Mark Franz along with incumbent John Dobbs. Gary Smith was elected superintendent with Lawrence Handel re elected board president and Gary Ingle as clerk. Mark Franz named representative to Kern County Committee on school district organization. Enrichment and learning skills programs discussed with sessions January 4 to February 11 and May 10 to June 10. Enrollment totaled 1683, 56 above last year. December 21 meeting canceled for holidays.

Police report thefts and arrests in local area
A Richland Jr. High teacher reported the theft of a Dataman education machine valued at 45 dollars Monday morning. A Walnut block resident reported tools and a toolbox stolen from a pickup Sunday afternoon. A pickup was taken from Nikkel Iron Works Monday afternoon. Feliciano Suago was arrested Sunday night on charges of unlicensed storage of open containers in a vehicle after a traffic stop. Sostenes Alvarez was arrested after a vehicle collision at Shafter Avenue and West Ash. charged with hit and run and unlicensed driver. David Donald Jones was arrested overnight on drunk driving charges. Daniel Amador was arrested during a traffic stop at Central and James.

Stabbing injures man in Shafter bar parking lot
On November 30 at 7 45 p m Kern County Sheriff's Deputies responded to an ambulance request at Smiths Cosners in rural Shafter where they found Francisco Lopez 50 of Shafter with a stab wound to the chest in the parking lot of the Samarripas Bar.

Freshmen 31 percent and 24 percent others. majority aware of graduation requirements. 13 percent called planning help fair, 39 percent good, 6 percent poor. Career center use varied. 64 percent say more job prep courses needed. Writing instruction rated adequate by a majority. library needs met well by many. Many students report drug concerns among acquaintances and mixed views on class time help. Athletic programs rated good or better. most students take part in athletics or clubs. Majority see no major racial tensions. survey cited as part of accreditation.
