Shafter and other Kern county cotton producers vote Saturday on whether to adopt AAA quotas to regulate 1940 marketing. Polls open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at multiple locations including Shafter and Bak er sfield office. Previous referendums showed mixed support. national approval stood at 84 percent. No cotton loans will be available in 1940 unless quotas prove effective.

Santa Claus and a Shafter committee announce the annual Christmas party at the Shafter theatre planned for December 20 and 21. Grammar school children from Richland Shafter Wildwood Maple Rio Bravo Lerdo and Belridge will attend with candy apples gifts and a showing of Christmas Carol plus a Katzenjammer Kids cartoon. About 1 800 children are expected across several performances with school principals coordinating.

Goertzen Service Held For Shafter Rancher Peter Goertzen
Funeral services were held Monday for Peter Goertzen 53, Shafter rancher, who died suddenly Friday after noon from acute myocarditis while working on a ditch on Poso street. The Mennonite Brethren church service was led by Rev. H. D. Wiebe with Rev. John Penner of Los Angeles assisting. Interment followed at Shafter cemetery. Goertzen, born in Russia, had lived in California 21 years and in Shafter 25 years. He was married to Elizabeth Janzen in 1909 and is survived by his wife, two sons Peter Jr. and Adolph, five sisters, two brothers, and his mother. Pallbearers included George Isaac and John Unruh.

Yields in the Shafter area run higher than recent years thanks to ideal warm dry fall weather. Despite smaller acreage, total harvest may reach about 13 700 bales with prices 9.70 to 9.75 cents per pound and seed at 28 dollars. Government pay may push income above 10 cents per pound. Oil well driller and wife drown in Tulare Lake tragedy
J. W. Johnson a 34 year old Superior Oil driller and his wife Florence 27 died when their small motor boat capsized near the Kings River mouth four miles from Stratford. A. W. Lantis 30 saved 20 month old Wesley Johnson Jr. and swam to shore with the child. Bodies were recovered about an hour later. Funeral services were held in Coalinga and burial in Louisiana. The accident followed another double drowning in the lake days earlier.

The Kern County Junior Chamber of Commerce board of directors meets Monday at 7 30 in the basement of the Jake Siemens home in Shafter to discuss a Mount Abel winter carnival with a ski lift runway hut and cleared space for beginners and tobogganing. A Shafter wildflower festival may be discussed if feasible and representatives from Kern county towns are expected. Mrs Siemens will host a social after the session.

General Petroleum plans to drill Caldwell No. 5 in the southern Shafter field with a derrick up for months. a spud date is not fixed but tools may move in within weeks. The site lies near Superior’s Helbling No. 1 and near a fault believed to mark the field edge. Far Rand No. 1 depth reached 6,300 feet. more area drilling expected. Drunken Driving Fined and Jailed in Local Court
James M. Cadenhead received a $50 fine and 30 day jail sentence after pleading guilty to drunken driving in Judge F. E. Manuel's police court. He was arrested Saturday evening by local officers.
